It is important that you understand how to select laundry methods according to the laundry labelling.
Labels are based on:
- the type of fabric
- how the fabric needs to be washed, ironed or dry cleaned.
There are many symbols that you will need to be familiar with, such as:
washtub wash triangle bleach circle dry clean square tumble dry iron iron Each of these symbols may have further information, such as:
- a wash tub with a hand, meaning hand wash.
If any of the base symbols are crossed out, it means DO NOT, for example:
- a cross over a washtub means DO NOT WASH - here you will usually find a dry cleaning symbol.

Care information and instruction labels:
- are essential to any type of fabric and quality garment products.
- provide information for caring and safe handling of fabrics.
Failure to read these labels carefully may result in:
- damaged items.
- complaints from guests.
The establishment will also have to pay the guest for damaged items.
Symbols help us know the process for washing or dry cleaning as well as for ironing each garment. As well as the five symbols for washing, bleaching, dry cleaning, drying and ironing. Some labels also show additional written instructions, such as:
- wash with similar colours
- wash separately
- dry flat
Instructions are usually brief. Make sure you check labels and understand what they mean.

You may be required to calculate laundry charges. Your calculations must be accurate to avoid complaints and confusion.
Most establishments have a template to fill in; this often has a number of colour coded copies for guests, accounts and housekeeping.
Laundry dockets usually have the following information:
- name and room number of guest
- description of item
- item ticked on template
- price of item
- number of items
- total laundry cost
Always repeat the guest's name and room number back to them to make sure you have correct information.

Many hotels provide laundry service for their guests. As an employee, you may be required to undertake duties for providing laundry services to customers or guests. It is important that you understand how to select appropriate laundry methods according to textile labelling, based on the type of fabric that needs to be washed, ironed or dry cleaned. There are many symbols you will need to be familiar with, as well as washing instructions you will need to understand, to make sure clothes and linen are cleaned correctly.
Company policies must be followed when providing a laundry service. If clothing is damaged this may have a financial impact on the organisation.
